Homophobia

Well this sick sucker is alive and well, isn't it? Just another crazy social prejudice that tries to justify being mean to people who are different from the majority. Those kinds of people have what I call "little weenie egos." They really don't feel good about themselves, so they want to try to make other people feel bad about themselves, too, and they think that will somehow make them feel better. Sometimes people are afraid of their own gay tendencies and so they strike out at people who are out, or at those they suspect of being gay. Yes, it's a sick, sad, crazy world sometimes, but you've gotta make the best of it, and even help make it better.

A lot of this crap comes from twisted ideas of religion. Fundamentalists from every religion love laws and regulations more than they do people. They've made their God in their own image, and they worship their laws and the delusion of being liked by God more than you are. In the early Christian days, they were called Scribes and Pharisees. If you're getting flak from people like this, recognize their ignorance and how pitiful they are, and walk proud. If you keep getting hassled, contact a gay rights organization like the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. (See links.) We've still got a long way to go, but you do have some legal rights.

If you're confused about your own sexuality, please start out by knowing that you don't have to jump into one of two little boxes for "straight" or "gay/lesbian." It's more like a continuum: think of a line with "purely straight" being a point way at one end and "purely gay" being a point at the other end. Most people actually fall somewhere in between. One out of ten people are gay or lesbian, even though many people still repress or hide it because of cultural homophobia. There are plenty of gays and lesbians in every country, every culture, and every religion. You're not really alone, even if you feel that way sometimes. Next time you're in a group of people, count how many there are and then figure out how many gay/lesbian people are probably around you. If you're struggling with these issues, check out the links and join the discussion board. Don't let other people's small minds take away your inner power. Talk to sane people.
